Lanzarote Holidays

Lanzarote is one of a few tourist destinations that seem to engender a devoted following. As many visitors come back year after year to spend their holiday on this volcanic outcrop in the Atlantic.

This popularity is in part stimulated by the incredible weather the island enjoys. With comparisons made to an eternal spring, the winters are mild and balmy, while its summers are more comfortable than the extremely sultry weather found in mainland Spain for instance. But the climate is not only mild, it is also fairly dry, due to the prevailing breeze that comes off the Atlantic. And this lack of humidity means that there are health benefits to be gained for sufferers of rheumatism and a range of other maladies. Yet it isn’t merely the climate that creates such loyalty.

As the island's development over the past 40 years has seen it avoids some of the worst aspects of tourism, such as a predominance of apartment blocks blotting the landscape. With a limit on the height of any building, a lack of advertising hoardings and uniformly white washed houses, Lanzarote looks and feels untouched by too much urban development. In fact, every area of the tourist infrastructure has been carefully planned to ensure that the island can offer a high quality holiday experience.

From the accommodation in Lanzarote to the individual tourist attractions, nothing is left to chance. And it is this kind of regulation that has helped to keep the island from turning into an eyesore. Thus building controls mean that even resorts such as Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen are pleasant to walk around and stay in. So any holiday villas in Lanzarote will normally enjoy lovely views of the sea or local mountains. And have a spacious distribution both internally and externally. The tourist attractions themselves have been designed to blend in with their surroundings and harmonize with the environment.

Thanks to the aesthetic of their creator, César Manrique, these centres still amaze and delight visitors today. And it is a design style, that still influences the construction of new buildings and public spaces today. Bars, hotels, parks and gardens all borrow from the Manrique repertoire, with white-washed surfaces, natural materials such as wood and stone and an abundance of greenery all helping to achieve similar effects. And which demonstrate an architectural continuity with the work that this great artist bestowed on his home island.
