Canada at a Glance

Canada is one of the country in North America which occupy most of the northern side of the continent, extending from the Pacific to Atlantic Ocean from east to west and Arctic Ocean to the north. Its border with the United States is the longest land border in the world - you might have already seen it from the plane, probably while you're taking flights to Montreal.

The name "Canada" is originated from an Iroquoian word, kanata, meaning "village". Before British and French settled the land in the late 15th century, the land was inhabited by various groups of Aboriginal people for thousands of years. In 1867, Canada was formed as a federal dominion through confederation and later highlighted for widening autonomy by the Statute of Westminster of 1931.

Canada is a federation which has three territories and ten provinces with the capital city in Ottawa. It's governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy - with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. English and French are Canada's official languages at the federal level, making it as a bilingual nation. Canada's national anthem is "O Canada" which adopted in 1980, beside its royal anthem "God Save the Queen". Its motto is a Latin "A Mari Usque Ad Mare" meaning "From Sea to Sea".
